Many people think that the only way to get ahead in a career is to get up early every morning, put on business attire, commute to a destination, do routine work, attend meetings, put in endless hours and report to higher ups who hold their career destinies in their hands.  Contrary to this dated business model, there are other ways of having a fulfilling profession, great lifestyle and good income. Digital entrepreneurship is one of them.  There are differing views about this profession.  Based on personal experience I would like to give you a sneak preview of the secret life of a digital marketer.

Digital entrepreneurs get out of bed when they feel like it

I don’t know of any of my colleagues at the SFM community who rise very early in the morning to “go to work.”  In fact, for most, it seems quite the opposite.  Many of us digital marketers are night owls. For whatever reason, we seem to operate at the highest efficiency during late hours.  Perhaps this is because there is little disturbance during the night and less competition for our attention.  But mostly, I believe that it is because our typical workday is atypical.  We create our schedules and prioritize our activities as we best see fit and as our personal needs require. We have a holistic approach to our careers.  We believe that we must take good care of the complete being.  In order to be productive, we must have balance in our lives.  Good health involves the nurturing of body, mind and soul. When we address the whole being, we can create anything we wish.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about.  The following describes my ideal day, which is doable with this type of career.  I’ve already experienced a good portion of these activities and I share them with you to show the possibilities that can be realized by owning a laptop business.

My ideal day begins with waking up in a huge bed laying on soft, white luxurious linens.  I’m in no rush to start the day.  I open my eyes to gaze at the beautifully carved ceiling medallions above me. They’re filled with flowers and woodland scenes and I wonder who could have created such a magnificent masterpiece. My spirit soars at the thought of this kind of inspiration.

As I do every morning, I take time to realign with my Higher self before beginning my day.  I spend the first few minutes in bed with my eyes closed thinking about all the people and the things that I am grateful for. As I linger, the aroma of the freshly pressed coffee coming from downstairs interrupts my concentration but then I come back to center.

Relishing this time and place, I get out of bed feeling energetic, peaceful and balanced. I have no concerns. I don’t have a job to rush off to, at least not one in the conventional sense.  I love and have fun with what I do for a living and it doesn’t feel like “work.” I’m thankful for my digital marketing business because it gives me the freedom, mobility and income that enables me to help others.

I sense exciting adventures awaiting today. I look forward to reading emails from people around the world. I’m especially looking forward to reading the ones from those I’ve helped. It’s not for egotistical reasons that I want to read them but as a reminder that we can always help someone, somewhere, sometime. What may seem insignificant for me, may be life changing to someone else.

Today, as nearly every day in this paradise, the sky is clear and the air is dry.  Our place sits on the side of a hill that is close to the water and is on the Lower Corniche around the corner from the medieval village of Eze. I hear vespas driving by with commuters heading to work and the sound of delivery trucks signaling that the work day has started. I don’t have to get up yet.

The view from my bed to the outside is through a floor to ceiling glass door.  I have a 180 degree panorama of the magnificent azure blue of the Mediterranean.  I see two small fishing boats streaming by in the distance. I’m in Cap D’Ail in the South of France. I love this place.  Every day I’m surrounded by active and healthy people always ready to offer a smile and a greeting.

This is a place where the welfare of the community is important. People are successful and willing to help those who are less fortunate. The cuisine, like the culinary trend back home, is farm to table. Fruits and vegetables just picked are delivered by trucks daily to local shops and restaurants.

After breakfast I do my yoga practice and daily meditation.  I have my laptop, an overflowing cup of latte and a freshly-baked croissant waiting for an online workshop to begin. I’m not leading this class, although I’ve signed up to spearhead future ones. My favorite audiences to teach are millennials who are looking for a career change. They’re active on social media, are in tune with the latest in digital information and are eager to learn new skills.  I’ve got great internet service and it makes it easy to participate and track my business without skipping a beat.  I enjoy our live webinars because they’re taught by industry leaders who are globally mobile and they’re great role models having created their dream lifestyles and careers.

As the business I’ve built is mostly automated, when the seminar is over, I have the rest of the day to call on friends, visit local sites, shop at open-air markets or stroll through churches, museums and galleries. I’ll be shooting lots of photographs, taking advantage of the perfect lighting today.

After breakfast I’ll be taking another flying lesson on a gyro-plane. My goal is to become a licensed pilot. Today we will fly to Cap D’Antibes, have lunch there and return in time for me to participate in humanitarian work.

Later this afternoon I’ll be volunteering at a local relief agency addressing the needs of newcomers from abroad who are looking for work and shelter. These individuals tug at my heartstrings reminding me of my family’s early days coming to America when mom, sis and I shared a one-bedroom apartment.

This evening my family will gather to dine al fresco overlooking the Mediterranean sea and watching the sun set on an ideal day.

Digital entrepreneurs only work on things they like

Isn’t it wonderful to know that there are careers like this one that you can just focus on what you want that day?  Today I mostly felt like writing so I focused on blogging.  There are days when I prefer to create a video.  The benefit of owning your own business is that no one dictates your activities.  This makes for better productivity because you’re focused on what you’re excited about.

Here’s another secret in the life of a digital entrepreneur.  Successful entrepreneurs focus on a handful of activities rather than spreading themselves too thin.  Content writing, sharing photos, placing ads, tracking results, analyzing advertising campaigns, attending or hosting seminars, creating videos are all part of a digital marketer’s business but should not all be done on one day.  The benefit of being your own boss is that you dictate which of these activities you do on what days.

Being selective about your activities and picking the ones that you like best will yield better results. “Blasting” on multiple social media venues is ineffective because this random activity is not targeting a specific audience.  Selecting the right medium is essential after you identify your target market.  In addition to the customary Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and YouTube there are other venues to connect with your audience.  Again, be selective, use the ones that bring your personality through and you enjoy working with.  When your business is fun, it doesn’t feel like work.

The secret life of a digital entrepreneur means working smarter.  Top producers outsource much of their work.  I use a great syndication service like  Onlywire.  I subscribe to a handful of networks from their list.  This is only a partial listing of the networks they connect with.

Digital entrepreneurs lounge around in sleeping clothes

Okay, that’s a secret that most professionals will never want you to know.  But, truth be told, if you don’t have to rush out the door to catch a train or carpool, then what’s the point of getting out of your nice warm jammies on a cold morning?  How many careers afford you this luxury?

I love this digital age because when I need data, it’s at my fingertips.  I gather information, put it together in a form that’s valuable to my audience and I can do this in my sleeping gear.  In my opinion, comfortable clothing creates ease and allows for relaxed creativity. Whether you’re in sleeping gear or lounging on a boat, so long as you have an internet connection, service to your clients is never compromised and your work environment doesn’t get any better.

If you’re wondering what kind of life you can expect with this profession, take a look here.  You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how you can combine comfort, lifestyle and income into one truly rewarding profession – that’s the truth about the secret life of a digital entrepreneur.
