Tired of working to realize someone else’s dream? Is it time to change companies, vocation or yourself? If you’ve been at the same career since you started, it’s not unusual to hit a wall by the time you’re in your forties. After a prolonged period of time, many professionals loose excitement and passion for their work. The time to infuse new energy is when you begin to question its purpose. The truth is that we can always be doing something more rewarding (on all levels) but seldom by working for someone else.  Even if the income is good, when you’re unfulfilled, you can never be truly happy.  When you start feeling like this, it’s time to look for alternatives and consider the benefits of working for yourself.

As the owner of your own business, you create the lifestyle you desire.  If you want to be a workaholic and continue to work 18 hours a day, it’s up to you.  But, I doubt that’s why you’d want to leave your corporate job in favor of working for yourself. Most people today are looking for more time freedom and lifestyle careers to replace their current income so they can spend more time with loved ones, have more fun and experience new adventures.

I’m following hundreds of entrepreneurs on Instagram; individuals, like myself, living on their own terms and refusing to be tied to a boss, a desk or a schedule. We can do this because our businesses are mobile. We have chosen to leave behind outdated career templates in favor of healthier lifestyles.

Owning a business that works even while we sleep provides the ultimate freedom to create a dream life.  Online marketers are not tied to clocks because their automated systems work 24/7/365. In this new digital economy we can work smarter not harder.

Lifestyle is a choice.  Decide what that looks like for you and set a plan to achieve it.  Follow your inner voice, not the Joneses, and then choose a career or a business that will help you achieve it.

Can you see yourself doing something that you can’t wait to get out of bed to do every day? As the owner of your own business, you’re working to achieve your career vision, not someone else’s. One of the benefits of a digital business, over a traditional one, is that as consumer patterns change you can tailor your business to meet the shifting needs. In a digital economy, you can make changes quickly unlike a traditional bricks and mortar businesses.

If you could do anything, what would it be?  What niche would you fill?  Would it be a product, service or an idea?  When you work online, you can market anything to anyone, anywhere in the world. How exciting is that? Imagine a career that is fun again, fulfilling and meets your needs. It doesn’t get better.

Don’t let money, or lack of it, get in the way of starting your own business.  If you have a vision but no funds, be resourceful. Where there is a will there is a way.  Keep your dream alive.  Invest in it.

  • Taking advantage of historically low interest rates at present is a smart move.  Refinancing or taking out an equity loan is one way to secure startup capital.
  • Look for investors.  There’s plenty of venture capital available and people interested in great endeavors, especially timely ones like a digital business in this new economy
  • Keep your day job for now until your venture begins turning a profit.
  • Vet family members or contacts with an entrepreneurial spirits and share your vision with enthusiasm.
  • Sell some assets
  • Work a supplemental job until your business is off the ground.

Thanksgiving week took up lot of my time between entertaining people for dinner and hosting overnight guests. I had no reason to worry about my business, however, because while I entertained my business was working.  When you own your own business, you have the freedom to dictate your own schedule.

If you’re thinking about working for yourself, consider an automated business.  There are auto responder and follow-up email systems that keep your business from skipping a beat.

You may also want to think about a global business that gives you the flexibility of working any time of day and not on a 9 – 5 schedule.  While my Thanksgiving guests slept, I worked my business.

As a digital marketer, for example, one can create advertising and content to reach people around the world twenty-four hours a day. Ads can be scheduled to activate at a particular time to reach the largest number of people in a target market.  Because of the ease of automation, digital marketing has become the smart choice as an entrepreneurial business.

The biggest challenge for entrepreneurs is using time responsibly.  While you have the freedom to spend the day as you wish, your professional activities need to be income producing.  Still, there are times such as during the holidays when we may have to slack off a bit.  When you own your own business no one says you can’t.

You’re accountable only to yourself.  You determine when you get paid.  Successful entrepreneurs reinvest profits, typically all in the beginning, to grow their businesses quickly.

As a business owner, you determine the kind of medical, dental or other insurance to have.  You’re not forced to use doctors that are on a list.  You choose the pension and investment plans that best suits you and your family’s needs. It’s up to you when you give yourself a raise or a bonus. You’re in charge of all benefits.

Imagine no more knots in your stomach caused by a boss that makes your life miserable or doesn’t like you.  No one can fire you.  There’s no favoritism or politics when you work for yourself.

One of the things I dislike about corporate America is the immense amount of wasted time on useless meetings, especially when they’re unnecessary or hosted for the mere purpose of justifying a manager’s position.  Most entrepreneurs are self-starters by nature and don’t require being told to do tasks necessary for success.

If meetings are necessary, you can host them online.  Gone are the days of wasting time and money on travel.  Online commerce has reduced the stress of waiting at airports endlessly, going through security checks, missing connections or enduring unpleasant flights.

Another benefit of owning your own business is that you can work with like-minded people. You determine your inner circle.  The most successful entrepreneurs hang out with other successful people.

Masters of their industries tend to be evolutionary thinkers, problem solvers and individuals constantly challenging themselves to grow.  They inspire and motivate. Choose to be a player on a team with leading-edge professionals.

Working for yourself means no attrition.  There aren’t new bosses in and out the door, no new departments because of reorganizations and no new policies that force you to start over every time there’s a change.  Consistency and continuity are important for morale, productivity and progress.  Run your business as smoothly as you wish.

How many corporate jobs let you take off for a month?  Many online business owners live mobile lifestyles.  Thanks to the Internet and ecommerce many professionals travel year round.  When your business operates from a laptop at the beach, you’re always on vacation.

Imagine never having to wear a business suit or stuffy work clothes again.  When you work for yourself, it’s Friday dress every day.  In colder climates, such as where I live in New England, it’s a real treat not to have to wear professional attire during a snowstorm.  It has been shown that there are real advantages and benefits to dress down Fridays. What about your hair?  If you didn’t make it to your hairstylist, one more week will not cause attention.

Create the environment you want around you.  Many businesses don’t allow personal items on a desk or work area.  I have the luxury of being surrounded by my favorite authors, self-improvement books, photos, cameras, food, decorations, and my dog, whatever I wish to have around to motivate me.  What does it matter what my office space looks like so long as I’m happy, productive and profitable?

When you work for yourself the benefits are endless.  If you’ve reached that stage in your career where you need something more, something different, consider taking a look at an online business that will do most of the work for you so you can have more fun. Find passion, excitement and joy in your work again and consider the benefits of working for yourself.
