Are you bored with your existing profession? Does your company expect too much of you? Do you have too many demands and not enough rewards? Are you working long hours and have little time for personal interests? If you’re thinking it may be time for a change, you’re not alone. Countless people are re-evaluating their career choices and looking to replace it with a more meaningful, fun and rewarding profession that provides more freedom and financial benefits. If you’ve been thinking that it’s time to do something different and if digital marketing has been on your radar, here are 6 must have traits to see if this industry is right for you.

The best in their professions have a passion for their craft

When I look at the leaders in my industry, the one thing they have in common is that they’re impassioned about what they do. Their occupation is in line with their mission in life. They’ve chosen lifestyle over money, which typically comes later and as a byproduct of practicing their vocation.

It’s interesting that in Latin, the word vocation means a calling or a summons. Following your calling provides a way to express yourself, to be who you’re meant to be. When you do this, you’re living your life’s purpose and life is fun because its effortless.

The happiest online professionals believe in what they’re marketing. I feel great about offering personal development services and products. It’s my passion and I never see it as selling. As anaffiliate in this industry, my business is a venue to help people lead better lives.

Masters use time and freedom wisely

Digital marketing entrepreneurs are freedom seekers. They seem to have loads of time on their hands and they’re constantly traveling. My teachers are currently on a two-year journey around the world working from a laptop. They invested large amounts of time initially setting up automated systems that run their businesses 24/7/365 to provide them with the freedom they’re enjoying today.

Despite the additional free time on their hands, they use it wisely. Instead of flittering their days away, they set aside a part of the day to check in on their businesses and stay in touch with their market. Still, they have plenty of hours left in the day for fun.

The most successful are organized

There’s a tendency by some people to misuse time. Free time does not mean doing nothing, it means using it wisely.

Top producers are organized by nature or have systems to help them. They know how to prioritize tasks and this makes them productive, this is an essential trait to doing well as an online marketer. When you’re getting started there are many new activities to take on, skills to learn and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Having order in your day helps you get through tasks more efficiently and successfully.

In this line of work, being organized is important because one skill builds upon another. There’s no worse feeling that having missed something in the beginning and having to start all over again when you’re pretty far down the road.

If you’re missing the organizational gene, no worries. Luckily there are endless apps and systems, many for free, to keep you on tract. I rely on Chrome and Google products for scheduling, to do lists, reminders and appointments.

Online marketing requires analytical skills

The most important activity in this profession is online advertising. In order to make the most of your marketing dollars, it’s essential to understand the feedback you’re receiving from your ad campaigns.

Successful marketers are comfortable with numbers, statistics and analytics. They study advertising campaigns daily to determine which ones are successful, delete the ones that are not working or tweak the ones that may still have potential.

The best in the industry always know where the leads are coming from, what keywords are being triggered and which markets are responding. They know if a certain time of day is more appealing for an ad, or if there’s a day of the week that is attracting more searchers.

Cost per lead, or the return on your investment, can only be gauged if your interpreting the data properly. This part of the business determines your profit or loss.

One of the best ways to analyze the results of my campaigns is to engage the support teams where I advertise. Developing a good relationship with a rep is a great way to get tips of do’s and don’ts. I use Bing or YouTube to advertise. I’ve learned to make friends with the reps so they can help me interpret the data and show me how to pull custom reports which paint an even clearer picture of the consumers’ patterns.

Advertisers want to keep their customers, as I do, and readily offer tips on how to maximize an ad’s exposure.  A good business relationship with the advertising team also ensures that I’m conforming to their platforms and that I won’t get shut down. I’ve known cases where businesses were closed because the ads did not follow the advertiser’s guidelines.

Top-tiered professionals are excellent at follow-through

Having good follow-through is an essential trait to have if you’re going to succeed. This is true in all businesses. Keeping connected with your leads develops trust. When your buyers know and have confidence in you, they will most likely come back. Repeat customers are the ones that will take your business to the next level.

I enjoy making new connections. Staying in touch with my “list” (I prefer to think of them as people) by offering value time and time again, is a great feeling.

Unless you have an ongoing dialogue with your market, it’s likely that they’ll forget you. It’s no different in real estate, or any other sales industry. Businesses grow with loyal customers. We live in a competitive business environment and the way to keep our businesses growing is to keep providing valuable offerings, especially to your existing customers.

Top producers see learning new skills as fun

If you like learning new things, if you enjoy challenges, digital marketing will keep you on your toes. Every day brings with it new opportunities to grow.

When I first started, I had no idea what an impression was. I’d never heard of RSS, PPC or CTR. It’s exciting to learn a whole new language. When you do, communicating with the global consumer market is easy. It’s exhilarating getting your first lead! It means you’ve communicated well. Your message was received and you got feedback. It means you’re on the right track.

There will be days or periods when you’re not receiving the number of leads you hoped for. That’s part of the course. If you’re easily discouraged remind yourself that it takes time to build a list. It took my mentors two years to reach about 70,000 contacts but now they’re reaping rewards into the seven digits.

Obstacles exist in any business. If you can see them as a game and find a solution, then you’ll have fun. Seeing problems lightheartedly will ensure that you always enjoy your business. It’s a necessary trait if digital marketing is going to be right for you.
